"The Art of Mask Work" according to Jacques Lecoq
“Mask work expands the actor’s range and ‘essentialises’ what the character and the situation have to express. It clarifies the body language and the tone of the voice. It raises the text beyond the ordinary; it filters out what is essential and lets the anecdotal details fall away, making things clear. (…) To play a mask well, you have to know it, to become friends with it. It must also be made to be played and must be a good mask.”
Jacques Lecoq, 1987, Le Théâtre du geste, Bordas.

An Unmasked Poetic Attempt
On a silent journey, the neutral mask awakens. In a state of discovery, this mysterious face does not hide, it reveals buried truths. The way opens. The larval mask move and come alive in a carnival taking shape. Metamorphic, the being transforms, searches, reveals itself, somewhere in another dimension. Then comes the Commedia dell'arte, with its colourful cast, taking to the timeless stage and joyfully sweeping us into a tarantella of lazzi, sharp-witted exchanges and acrobatics. The human comedy unfolds. Expressive masks emerge, dreamy, insolent, tearful or enthusiastic, mirrors of souls rooted in reality, celebrating the present moment.
